The reinvented Battlestar Galactica, written and executive produced by sci-fi veteran Ronald D Moore (whose credits include Roswell, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Carnivale) won glowing reviews and smashed records as the highest-rated original series in the 12-year history of the Sci-Fi Channel.
Set in the distant solar system, the people of the 12 Colonies of Kobol have lived in peace with the Cylons for over 40 years. The Cylons are sentient cyborgs, sophisticated robots with artificial intelligence. Gaining intelligence and consciousness, the Cylons turned on their masters and annihilated the entire human population in a sudden sneak nuclear attack.
At the time of the attack, the Battlestar Galactica is being decommissioned and turned into a museum ship. Being too far out during the nuclear attack, Battlestar Galactica became the sole surviving battlestar, carrying with them the last survivors of mankind.
With the death of the Colonial President, civilian authority is transferred to Laura Roslin (Academy Award nominee Mary McDonnell), secretary of education and forty-third in the line of succession. An almost retired war hero, Commander William Adama (Academy Award nominee Edward James Olmos) of the Battlestar Galactica becomes the highest-ranking military official left alive.
Faced with the reality of being hopelessly outgunned and outnumbered, Adama decides to escape with the civilian craft and seek out a new home for humanity _ a mythical planet known as ``Earth''.

Lt Kara Thrace, aka Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff) _ The devil-may-care pilot is now a female character, albeit a tough, cigar-chomping, alpha-female who cuts it as one of the guys.
Dr Gaius Baltar (James Callis) _ An edgy scientific genius who gives into the seduction of the Cylon, Number Six, and lives under the constant threat of being exposed as a traitor.
Number Six (Tricia Helfer) _ The re-imagined Cylons have shed their chrome-plated shells and Number Six is indistinguishable from its human creators _ and as sexy as a villainess can get.
